I'm John, a copywriter and award-winning screenwriter with 10+ years of diverse storytelling experience.
I'm currently based—and was born—outside Philadelphia, home of Boyz II Men, Gritty, and the inspiration behind David Lynch's Eraserhead (fun fact).
Over the past 15+ years, I've lived in Philly, LA, and Boston. All 3 cities shaped my personality, sense of humor, and writing style: my desire to entertain (LA), my urge to intellectualize (Boston), and my need to do my own thing (Philly).
What sets me apart as a copywriter:
Screenwriting. To bring my words to life, I learned to pitch my ideas, collaborate, and take feedback (and rejection) with enthusiasm. Plus, it's not academic writing. I know the rules, but I'm not afraid to break 'em for the sake of a cleaner read.
Playing in bands. I'm a 5/10 on guitar. So early on, I ended up behind the mic. But I can't sing. So, to justify my post, my lyrics had to be good. Or, at least, interesting. Songwriting taught me word choice, lyrical rhythm, pacing, and structure.
Working retail. A goth shop, video store, bookstores, big box, & beyond. Each shift was a lesson in commerce, human behavior, the contagiousness of attitudes, the nature of time, and the power of iced espresso.
When I write, I:
Face the blank page with an open mind. Ditch my ego. Surrender to the process. Collaborate with enthusiasm. Write with intention. Strive to emotionally engage, express a universal truth, and leave people feeling optimistic.
When I'm not writing, I'm:
Reading (like, book-books), watching cult movies, crate-digging (my tastes skew electronic), or exploring nature with my fam and our maniacal chihuahua puppy.
