I currently live—and was born—outside Philadelphia (the inspiration for David Lynch's Eraserhead, fun fact). I spent a rollercoaster-y decade split between LA and Boston. All 3 cities helped shape my personality, sense of humor, and writing.
What sets me apart as a copywriter: my screenwriting background. To bring my words to life, I had to collaborate fiercely, generously, and (often) frenetically. I learned early on to surrender my ego, accept feedback with grace, and grow comfortable facing rejection and (sometimes devastating) changes. It also gives me a unique POV when it comes to visual storytelling, structure, and pitching my ideas.
Over the years, I worked in retail while sharpening my writing. I rewound VHS tapes in a dying video store all day while transcribing episodes of the Office (UK) and Curb all night. I replenished shelves of sheets, towels, and beyond on weekends while cranking out essays on Buñuel and Fellini during the week. And, while attempting to land steady work as a writer, I supervised a team of booksellers, and coordinated author events—most notably: Roxane Gay and George Saunders.
Each shift was like a mini writing lesson: in dialogue, conflict, and character development (my own included). I learned a lot about human behavior, the nature of time, the contagiousness of attitudes, and the power of iced espresso.
When I write, I:
Face the blank page with a free mind. Jettison my ego. Surrender to the process. Collaborate with enthusiasm. Write with intention. Emotionally engage readers. Express a universal truth. Leave people feeling optimistic.
When I'm not writing, I'm:
Reading (like actual book-books), watching movies (tearjerkers and mind-benders, lately), making electronic music, or exploring nature with my fam and our maniacal chihuahua puppy.
